WEST ONEONTA — Wayne Georgia, 71, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013.
He was born April 7, 1941 in Oneonta, the son of Carson and E. Pauline (Woerhle) Georgia.
Wayne graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1959, and the State University College at Oneonta in 1969.
He married Charlotte Holbrook in 1969 in Oneonta.
Wayne worked at Jerry’s Restaurant, Dietz St., Oneonta from 1963 to 1967 when he went on to work for the D&H Railroad as an engineer. He worked on the railroad until 1982. During his employment with the railroad he also went to work at the New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) in Oneonta in 1975. He retired from SEMO as Deputy Director in 1996.
He was a member of the Oneonta Elks Club, the NRA and was a founding member of the Oneonta Young Democrats. Wayne was a member of OHS and SUNY Oneonta’s tennis teams and later went on to instruct the youth of the greater Oneonta area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, attending his many grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events and spending winters in Florida during his retirement. His faithful lab, Opal, was always ready to go with Wayne whether it was to work or to play.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Georgia of West Oneonta; his daughters, Tracie and George Jones of Oneonta, Carrie Chickerell of Birmingham, Ala., Shelly and David Rosen of Washington, D.C., Tammy and Russell Southard of Oneonta, Darci and Kent Merwin of Davenport; Christina and Randall Zuill of Davenport, Michelle and Paul Catan of Oneonta. 18 grandchildren: Jasin, Heather, Michael and David Jones, Ryan and Colin Rosen, Reisa, Brandon and Tyler Southard, Stephen Georgia, Katharine and Luke Merwin, Edward and Rachel Zuill, Danika, Christopher, Reilly and Mackenzie Catan; four great-grandsons with the fifth expected next month.
