NORTH FRANKLIN — Thomas M. Skovsende passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at his home in North Franklin on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013. He was 60 years old.
Tom, as he was known to everyone, was born in Margaretville on Nov. 19, 1952. He was the oldest son of Neils and Barbara (Boyd) Skovsende.
Tom graduated from Franklin Central School in 1970, and soon realized the family farm was too small for all of them. He then studied carpentry at SUNY Delhi and graduated in 1972.
After graduation, he furthered his experience by working with his father-in-law, Ralph Sitts Sr. Before long he started Skovsende Construction.
Tom married his high school sweetheart, Georgetta Sitts on Aug. 31, 1974. Later that year, Tom built their house on Grange Hall Road, where over the next 39 years they would call it home and raise their family.
Tom was a patient man who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He was the self-appointed mayor of North Franklin who enjoyed helping family, friends and neighbors whether it was mowing lawns or plowing driveways.
Tom was a successful businessman and a truly loving husband and father who will be deeply missed by all.
Tom is survived by his wife, Georgetta; daughter, Krista (Tony); and son, Aaron (Megan); his parents, Neils and Barbara Skovsende; brother, Garry and wife, Denise; brother-in-law, Ralph Sitts Jr. and wife Phylis. Tom is also survived by his aunt, Nora; uncle, Joe and wife Elsie; niece, Melanie; nephews, Wesley and Garret Sitts and Jamie and Brandon Skovsende; as well as several cousins; and many close friends.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at noon Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, with Dale Gordon officiating. Immediately following the service there will be a celebration of Tom’s life at the Aldrich Baptist Church, State Highway 28, North Franklin.
Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, at the convenience of the family.
