John F.H. Schluep
ONEONTA — John F.H. Schluep died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown, following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 2, 1922, the only child of Bertha Jung and Edward J. Schluep of Manhattan.
John attended Hartwick College, and earned a master's degree from Columbia.
Following service as an officer in the Navy in World War II, John taught math, first at the high school level and then at SUNY Oswego.
He co-authored several books, including a series of math textbooks for elementary schools. He was a popular speaker at workshops throughout the country, and worked for the New York State Education Department as a consultant.
In July of 1943, John married fellow Hartwick College graduate, Betty Barlow of Treadwell. They returned to Otsego County following John's retirement from formal teaching in 1980. They enjoyed involvement in local groups, John continued to tutor and do consulting work into his 80s.
John is survived by his wife, Betty; his children, John (Patricia), Mark and Elizabeth (David); six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In honor of his life John asked that donations be made to the Milford Emergency Squad, and Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc.
In keeping with John's wishes the family will hold a private celebration of his life at a later date.
