---- — Terrill ‘Terry’ Kirkey
ONEONTA — Terry Kirkey died on Feb. 18, 2013, at Otsego Manor in Cooperstown, as a result of complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 62 years old.
Born on July 30, 1950, in Malone, Terry was the son of Patricia (Lincoln) and Lloyd Kirkey. After graduating from Liverpool H.S. in Liverpool, he attended SUNY Oneonta where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology.
During his years at SUNY, he met his future wife, Carol Kiehn Kirkey. They were married on Aug. 13, 1977, and were richly blessed with 35 years together.
Known for his bright blue eyes and infectious smile, Terry was a dear friend to many. Generous by nature, he donated his time and talent to numerous community organizations including Oneonta Little League, Oneonta Youth Soccer League, Oneonta Jaycees, Family Services Association, Oneonta Dollars for Scholars, and the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeast New York.
Much of Terry’s career was spent at Astoria Federal Savings and Loan Association and Wilber National Bank where his responsibilities were focused on home appraisals and mortgages.
Prior to his banking career, Terry spent several years as the proprietor of Kirk’s Carpet Service, at Sampson Floors and at Endwell Rug Company. Aching knees caused a change in career, but all told, there is hardly a home in Otsego County that hasn’t been serviced by Terry for flooring or lending.
The last five years of Terry’s life were spent at Serenity Place, Otsego Manor, where he was cared for by compassionate, competent caregivers. Thanks to them Terry and Carol continued to live a full and rich life despite the challenges presented by his illness.
Terry was happiest when spending time with family and friends. He is lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend, Carol; sister, Constance Davis and her husband, Robert; sister Deborah Vickery and her husband, Terry and son Ryan; sister-in-law, Janet Kiehn; brother-in-law, Richard Kiehn his wife, Margery and children, Kathryn and Matthew; brother-in-law, David Kiehn, his wife, Deborah and son, Brady. Also surviving are his godchildren, Cathy Yatko Hubbard and Adam Torrey; and special “almost daughter” Erica Torrey Slonaker.
Terry was predeceased by his parents; his father-in-law, Harold Kiehn; his mother-in-law, Margaret Kiehn Berkery; and his stepfather-in-law, Eugene Berkery.
The journey through Alzheimer’s disease presents challenges and joys. Terry and Carol are forever grateful to all who traveled with them: their loving and supportive family and friends, caregivers at Otsego Manor, Catskill Area Hospice staff and Alzheimer’s Association colleagues. You provided the strength necessary to face each day, one by one, and to savor the beautiful moments and memories each day held.
Terry was dedicated to helping others impacted by this disease and has made arrangements for brain donation to the Harvard Brain Bank at Maclean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. He would encourage all to consider such donations.
All those who wish are welcome at visiting hours at Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2013.
A funeral Mass will be offered at St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013.
