CLYDE/GEORGIA — Robert L. Moon of Cumming, Ga., formerly of Oneonta, died March 13, 2013, at the age of 87, after a long illness.

He was a devoted husband, and a loving father and grandfather.

Family and friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 17, at Pusateri-Canolesio Funeral Home, 68 Sodus St., Clyde.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 18, at St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church, 48 Pulteney St., Geneva. A military service will immediately follow in Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Romulus.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society, Meals on Wheels or any veterans organization.

He graduated from Clyde Central High School and entered active service in 1945, in U.S. Navy and attended the University of Rochester for officer training. Moon was assigned to the So. Pacific Squadron I B, at Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii.

His service included witnessing the wounded in Nagasaki and the formal surrender of the Wakiyama region and patrolling the area for weaponry. He also served in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

In 1946, he joined NYSEG and worked on laying the gas lines through much of Upstate New York. Moon completed his B.S. at the University of Rochester and was promoted into NYSEG management, where he spent the rest of his career. He retired from NYSEG in 1986, and moved to Cumming, Ga., in 2007.

Moon was an active volunteer involved with the Council to the State University College at Oneonta, Council for the Boy Scouts of America and an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels. U.S. Senator Moynihan appointed Moon to a U.S. Senate Advisory Committee on the Aging.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Regina Barton Moon; daughter, Deborah Moon (Lawrence J.) Jordan of Princeton, N.J.; son, Robert B. (Wendy McArthur) Moon of Cumming, Ga.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
