FLY CREEK — Arthur John Snyder of Fly Creek passed away peacefully at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, on Oct. 11, 2012. Arthur was born on Feb. 4, 1923, in South Valley, the son of George and Irene (Gillette) Snyder. He is survived by his wife, Freida (Putnam), whom he married on Feb. 24, 1946.
In addition to his wife, he leaves four children, Katherine Snyder of Syracuse; Jack Snyder and wife Janet of Fly Creek, Janice and husband Denis Millea of Peru, and Robert Snyder and wife Gwen of Cooperstown; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by a sister, Ruth, and husband Richard Lotridge of Palatine Bridge; a brother, Clifford, of Cooperstown; and sisters-in-law Jenny Snyder of Schenevus and Mary Whiteman of Hobart. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Mildred Mabie, and a brother Fred.
Arthur enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 with the 98th Field Artillery Infantry Division. He was a WWII veteran and served in the Pacific and occupation of Japan from 1942 to 1946. Following the war he was employed at Glensfoot Farms in Cherry Valley then as manager of Eastover Farms in Cherry Valley.
In 1955, he and his family moved to Fly Creek where he owned and operated a dairy farm. He was also a school bus driver for 27 years for the Cooperstown School District and, after his retirement from farming, was employed by the village of Cooperstown.
Arthur was an active member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of Sgt. Walter F. Eggleston VFW Post #7128 in Cooperstown and a charter member of the Fly Creek Area Historical Society. He was an avid bowler and had a passion for following sports, especially watching his children and grandchildren participate.
Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 14, 2012, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Pioneer Street, Cooperstown. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Fly Creek United Methodist Church in Fly Creek with the Rev. Thomas Pullyblank officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.
