GILBERTSVILLE — Esther L. Hill, 87, passed away at her home in Gilbertsville on March 23, 2013.
She was born in Gilbertsville in 1925, the daughter of Walter Lamphere and Hettie (Gilbert) Lamphere.
She married Robert J. Hill on Jan. 6, 1944, at the Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville. They had been married for 58 years at the time of Bob’s passing in 2002.
She was a lifelong resident of Gilbertsville. She was a member of the Butternuts Chapter 338, Order of the Eastern Star, a 75-year member of the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church and was the oldest living member. She was a 70-year member of the Butternut Valley Grange and had continuously held an officer’s position for the past 30 years and the last 19 years as chaplain.
She had also been a member of the Pomona, State and National Grange. She was also a member of the Women’s Relief Corps, a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 1339 of Gilbertsville, as well as being a member of the local Pinocle Club.
She was a farmer’s wife and a housekeeper for Mrs. Margaret Gilson of Morris for several years. She and her sister-in-law, Darlene had operated a catering service. She later was employed as the cafeteria manager at Gilbertsville Central School until her retirement in 1990. After retirement she worked in the food service department at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home part-time.
Esther is survived by her children, Susan and James V. Pochy, Dennis R. Hill, Michael J. and Barbara L. Hill, all of Gilbertsville; her six grandchildren, Amy and Zack Proskine, Ben and Kate Hill, Crystal and Travis Michaud, Patrick and Michelle Hill, James R. Pochy, Ashley Hill; her 11 great-grandchildren, Lauren Hill, Garrett Proskine, Hunter Michaud, Emily Hill, Tater Proskine, Haley Michaud, Rachel Hill, Ethan Hill, Robert Hill, Hadley Michaud and Evan Hill. She is also survived by a sister, Ethyle Canada; a brother, Lewis Lamphere; a brother-in-law, Royce and Darlene Hill; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
She was predeceased by her grandchildren, Jason and Katelyn Hill; a sister, Helen and James Quinn; and a brother-in-law, Harold Canada.
Esther will always be remembered to those who loved her and knew her as a great cook, good friend, wife, mother, favorite aunt, wonderful grandma and great-grandma! The ready smile and sense of humor gave us all a chuckle.
Calling hours will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held immediately at 1 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Mark Piedmonte, officiating.
Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad, or the Capital Improvement Fund of the Butternuts Valley Grange or the Capital Improvement Fund of the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church in her memory.
