Georgianna E. Halbert
GILBERTSVILLE — Georgianna E. Halbert, 91, passed away on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin. She was born in Walton, the daughter of Alfred A. Currie and Anna M. (Butler) Currie. She married Robert Wilson Halbert on June 22, 1946 in the DeLancey Presbyterian Church. Robert passed away on April 22, 2001.
Throughout the years Georgianna worked at Dairylea in Mt. Upton as a clerk, Lennox Insurance Co. and retired from Preferred Mutual Insurance Company in New Berlin. She was also a foster mother and a childcare provider.
She was a member of the Butternut Valley Grange for 76 years and served continuously as an officer from 1946 until 2007. She was a member of the Pomona, State and National Granges. She was a Junior Deputy from 1977-1981 for Otsego County. She served as chair of the refreshment booth for the Otsego County Fair for many years. She was also a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church where she served as moderator of the womens group for several years. She was a longtime correspondent for the New Berlin Gazette and the Tri Town News, Sidney.
While she freely shared her ideas, even to the point of correction, she was also quick to praise and compliment others for doing a good job. She had a huge heart and an open purse to assist one who needed a boost. In addition to her church and Grange associations, her favorite pastime was a game of cards for which she was always ready. Georgianna was well known for her homemade baked beans, a usual request at family reunions and at the county fair food booth. She is fondly remembered as one to get others involved and to help a cause that needed workers. She would willingly head up a benefit dinner or arrange for food or other help when one was in need. She could easily get the cooperation of many to help with a project, as it was always easier to acquiesce and do the job when she asked instead of finding an excuse not to.
