UNADILLA — Neva Carolyn Martin Jacobs, 96, passed away Feb. 2, 2013, at the A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1917, in Lew Beach, the fourth daughter of James Guy and Maude Emerson Martin. Her family lived on a large farm in Bloomville until she was 10-years-old. They then moved to a farm off the River Road (now Holowacz Road) in Unadilla. One of her fondest memories was her father taking her, her sisters and friends to the movies in Sidney by horse and sleigh.

Neva graduated from Unadilla Academy in 1934. Her class was the last class to graduate from the old building. She has attended many alumni reunions over the years.

On April 27, 1939, she married Ronald Slade Jacobs at the Methodist Church parsonage in Sidney. They resided in Sidney on Bridge Street for a few years and then moved to Unadilla to become partners in Brion’s Store, an ice cream, candy and card shop. While raising their two children, Neva was an Avon Lady and also worked at The Woodshed, another popular soda fountain in Unadilla.

In 1959 Neva began working at Scintilla Bendix, in Sidney and retired in 1979. She and Ronnie often traveled to Cape Cod, to Ithaca to see their son and his family, also to California to visit their daughter and her family. They first met at a dance and always loved to dance to local bands, like the D’Imperio Brothers Band or the Russ Nygren Group.

Neva was an avid reader and was a member of the Unadilla Library Board for 10 years. She was also a member of the Unadilla Women’s Club. She and a group of friends formed a sewing club, which met monthly, alternating at member’s homes for many years in Unadilla.

She was predeceased by her parents; her in- laws, Slade and Greta Jacobs; and her three sisters, Letha Martin, Geraldine Martin and Eileen Martin O’Hara. Her beloved husband of 40 years, Ronnie, passed away in 1979.
