ONEONTA — John T. Stachina, 77, born in Summit Hill, Pa., the son of John and Kathryn Kalista Stachina, grandson of Cazimer and Mary Kalista and Thomas and Josephine Szczecina (Stachina), passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013.

He attended St. Stanislaus School and Summit Hill High School. He took business courses at Rutgers University in Elizabeth, N.J.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 until he was honorably discharged in 1956.

He married Carolyn Parizek on June 29, 1957, in Alexandria, Va. They lived briefly in Minot, N.D., where the first of their five children was born. They moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked in the Stock Transfer Department and was promoted to trust officer of the Bank and Trust of Washington, D.C.

In 1974, he moved his family to a 10-acre farm outside of Morris. He continued to work in Washington, D.C., and commuted to Morris for five years. He created John’s Home Improvement Business.

He ran the Motor Vehicle Department in Norwich from 1980 to 1992. He ran the Oneonta Motor Vehicle from 1992 until he retired in 1995.

He enjoyed doing various handyman jobs for friends and relatives after his retirement.

He was a baptized member of the United Church of God and International Organization. He was a song leader and enjoyed telling little humorous stories before leading the congregation in hymns and songs of praise.

Every year, since 1986, he attended his church’s Feast of Tabernacles in various sites around the country, becoming close friends with hundreds of people from around the world.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Carolyn; are children, Marc and his wife, Patricia of Davenport, Diane and her husband, Tim Jacobsen of Navassa, N.C., Robert of Greensboro, N.C., and Kathryn of Clifton Park; grandchildren, Jason Jacobsen, Amanda and husband Brad Donnison and Melissa Jacobsen; sister Barbara Chambers; nephew, Roy Chambers and his wife, Terra; aunts and cousins.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents and grandparents; are son, David Stachina; brother, Bernard Stachina; brother-in-law, Roy Chambers; mother-in-law, Myrtle Parizek and father in law, Charles Parizek.

John will be sorely missed by his family and friends and everyone who knew and loved him.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris with Mr. John Lambert officiating.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family at a later date.
