Martha JeanSmith Wenner
FLY CREEK — Martha Jean Smith Wenner died on April 8, 2013, at her home in Fly Creek, surrounded by her husband of nearly 59 years, Francis J. Wenner, and many family members.
Martha was born in Plainfield on March 24, 1932.
She attended Port Jefferson High School on Long Island, where she was salutatorian of her senior class.
Martha met and married Frank on April 24, 1954.
While she was active in many causes throughout her life, she believed her greatest accomplishment was raising her family.
Martha’s childhood prayer was: “To love and be loved,” and to that end she abundantly accomplished both.
She is survived by 12 children and their spouses, Paul Wenner (Janet) of Stamford, Lynette Wenner (Michael Gillick) of Cotopaxi, Colo., Thomas Wenner of St. Petersburg, Russia, Joan Tiner (James) of Richmondville, Matthew Wenner (Jane) of Gloucester, Va., Therese Wenner of Olympia, Wash., Donna St. Peter (Timothy) of Carlisle, Mary Manz (Michael) of Charlotte, N.C., Stephen Wenner (Pamela) of Attleboro, Mass., Diane Pare (James) of Liverpool, Elaine Calvino (Michael) of Tampa, Fla., and Carl Wenner of Fly Creek. She is also survived by 35 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, at St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown by Father John P. Rosson, pastor, and Father Edmund Castronovo, pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Verona, as co-celebrants.
The family will be in attendance from 5 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2013, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown to receive friends.
In lieu of flowers, for those who so desire, the family suggests that donations be made in Martha’s memory to EWTN, 5187 Old Leeds Road, Irondale, AL 35210.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown.
