SIDNEY — Hope Crandall Meyer, 85, of Sidney, went peacefully to be with our Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Bassett Hospital.

She was born Aug. 6, 1928, in Oneonta, to Leroy and Helena (Donlin) Crandall of Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. She attended Saint Mary’s School and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1945 at age 16. After graduation, Hope was offered a position with the FBI in Washington, D.C., for six months at the end of World War II.

She was employed by New York State Electric and Gas before becoming a homemaker and raising five children.

In 1951, Hope married Patrick F. O’Hara, who predeceased her in 1952. She later married William R. Meyer in 1957, and resided in Oneonta. Hope and Bill moved to Sidney and built one of the first homes on Hatfield Avenue.

Following William’s retirement from the New York State Police in 1977, Hope and Bill traveled extensively throughout Europe and visited relatives in Germany and Ireland. They then enjoyed a long career of buying and selling antiques and collectibles throughout the eastern United States.

Hope was a voracious reader of mysteries and enjoyed traveling, including their annual week of vacation to the Saratoga Race Track and Lake George.

She was a devoted member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney.

Hope will be remembered with love by her husband of 56 years, William R. Meyer of Sidney; children, Patrick (Nancy) O’Hara of Arnold Lake, Milford, William (Sharon) Meyer of Sidney, Stephen (Bonnie) Meyer of West Winfield, Bridget (Steven) Bargher of Sidney and Gerald (Leslie) Meyer of Sidney; grandchildren, Dr. Ashley (Evan Brady) O’Hara, Helena (Justin) LaDue, Chloe Meyer, Heike and DeAnna Meyer; Nicole, Brandy and Zachary Bargher; Gerald and Zoe Meyer; and great-grandchildren, EmmaLynn and Holden LaDue.
