Grace Hubbard Reed
ONEONTA — Grace Hubbard Reed, 95, died peacefully following a brief illness on June 3, 2013.
She was born Jan. 3, 1918, in Brooklyn, the daughter of James Swift Hubbard and Katharine Aikman Hubbard.
She attended Erasmus High and Pratt Institute and on Aug. 9, 1942, married Cameron “Bill” Reed at the Flatbush-Tompkins Congregational Church.
Grace worked as a secretary for Standard Oil of New Jersey at Rockefeller Center and later in life for the Nassau Council Boy Scouts of America. Mostly, she worked at being a great Mom and homemaker. After her children, her proudest accomplishment was her membership in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as a descendent of Hezekiah Hubbard (Lexington and Concord). Originally, she was a member of the Col. Aaron Ogden chapter, Garden City, later transferring to the Oneonta chapter DAR.
Grace, a 50-plus year member of the Garden City Community Church (UCC) was very active in church and community activities. She was definitely a “city “ girl with a great love of the ocean but after moving to St. James Manor in 2001, fell in love with Otsego County’s rolling hills and lakes especially enjoying her Saturday trips for a whiskey sour and lobster roll at the Blue Mingo or the Neptune Diner. Her “guilty” pleasure was an ice cream soda from the Golden Guernsey.
Survivors include her daughter, Priscilla Reed Welch of Goodyear Lake; her sister-in-law, Mary M. Hubbard of Sun City Center, Fla.; a niece, Susan Hubbard Corbett of Florida; and a nephew, Richard (Rose) Hubbard of Illinois.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Bill (1991) and her son, Walter (2000) as well as her sons-in-law, Michael C. Welch (1983) and Michael J. Breen (2007).
A memorial service will be held in the Milford Center Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 1, with the Rev. Enid Carter of St. James Manor, presiding.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorial donations may be made to Oneonta Chapter, NSDAR, P.O. Box 103, West Oneonta, NY 13861 or Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Dr., Oneonta, NY 13820.
