EDMESTON — John VanVranken, 87, of Edmeston, died April 7, 2013, and was reunited with his beloved wife Millie; and his brothers and sisters.
He was born June 20, 1925, in Amsterdam, the son of Le Roy and Louise (Moshier) VanVranken.
He married Millie Filer on Sept. 15, 1945, in Gilbertsville.
A workaholic farmer he, was always upsizing the family farm. John retired from farming in 1986, and moved into town. John retired from the Edmeston Highway Department as superintendent in 1992.
He was a self-taught carpenter, plumber, electrician, welder and doer of all trades and master of none. A consummate semi-professional capable of almost everything and knower of all; one just had to ask him.
John offered numerous quotes and many words of wisdom. “There are tricks to all trades, and dad drives screws with a hammer.” “Time waits for no man, but a damn few women.” “I may not always be right, but I am never wrong.”
His marriage to Millie, his family and community were important aspects of his life. He thoroughly enjoyed each and every family reunion and neighborhood picnics; and loved his ice cream social nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
John will be missed by his children, Suzanne (Frank) Yaple, Sandra (Dee Sheffield) VanVranken, Carolyn (Rich) Patrickson, Sharon (Brad) Mumbulo, John Jr. (Alta) VanVranken, Robert (JoAnn) VanVranken and Nancy (David) Haley; his extended family, Walter (Carolyn) Carney and Bill (Lori) Gray; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, with three on the way; his sister, Ruth Brown; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
His wife, Millie; his brothers, Le Roy (Roy), Abram (Bill), Francis (Fran) VanVranken; his sisters, Lucille (Sis) Sanguine, Dorothy (Dot) Houk, Helen Dickinson and Mary VanVranken predeceased John.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating.
Interment will be in Edmeston Union Cemetery, followed by a reception.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston
