Marjorie Josephine Hathaway
ONEONTA — Marjorie Josephine Hathaway passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 5, 2013.
Marjorie was born March 19, 1934, the daughter of Alma E. (Kernan) and Lynn Wallace Hathaway, Esq.
Marjorie was a student of a sight-saving class at Alexander Hamilton School in Binghamton, from 1942 to 1945.
At age 21, Marjorie left Otego, headed to Quebec, and then set sail for South Hampton to spend a month in Norwich, England, as part of an experiment in international living, led by Michael Heyman, a student at Harvard Law School.
Marjorie worked for an accounting firm in New York City for sometime before returning to Oneonta where she worked in the business office at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for over 20 years.
After ‘retiring,’ Marjorie kept busy being a crossing guard for Center Street School until the school closed its doors in 2012; and ran for Alderman for Oneonta’s Seventh Ward in 2007.
Marjorie loved gardening, carpentry and doing jigsaw puzzles. She was an avid animal rights advocate and leaves behind her beloved cat, Buddy.
Marjorie is survived by her sister, Donna H. Robinson of Wells, Maine; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Marjorie was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, John G., Robert J., and Walter J. Hathaway; her sister, Ruth L Glazer; her half brother, Lynn Ward Hathaway; her half sisters, Helen J. Grandsburry, Charlotte K. Card, Laura H. Gilchrist; and her good friend and housemate, Dorothy Douglass.
A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. July 27, 2013, in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make donations in Marjorie’s memory to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.
