MASONVILLE — Roy D. “Jim” Dewey Jr., 89, formerly of the town of Sidney, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.
He was born May 4, 1924, in Copes Corners, Town of Butternuts, the son of Roy D. and Ruth (Gibson) Dewey.
He married Elza (Kitty) Dewey on Jan. 27, 1942, who predeceased him on Dec. 4, 2007.
Roy retired as a heavy equipment operator from the towns of Sidney and Masonville. In his retirement he enjoyed working on engines and doing lawn work.
Roy will be missed greatly by everyone who knew him including his friends and “girlfriends” at the NYS Veterans Home.
He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in field artillery and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Roy is survived by his children, Rodney Dewey of Phoenix, David and Lucille (Budine) Dewey of Sidney Center, Tom and Sugi (Puglisi) Dewey of Sidney, Retha Taber and Shirley Dewey of Unadilla. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, whom he was very proud of. Roy also leaves his siblings, Gerti Pierce Boyd of New York Mills, Fred and Frances Dewey of Hubbardsville and Raymond and Helen Dewey of Norwich; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Manuel and Pete; and his sister, Marie Squires.
A service of celebration of the life of Roy E. “Jim” Dewey will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Interment Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.
The family requests contributions be made to the Masonville Emergency Squad in Roy’s memory.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Westcott Funeral Home Inc. of Unadilla.
