SIDNEY CENTER — Beverly Ellen Steele, 79, of Sidney Center, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 12, 2013, at home.
Born on Nov. 7, 1933, the daughter of the late Grace and Perry Shaver, Bev attended Sidney Central School with the Class of 1953.
She married her loving husband, Willard C. (Pete) Steele, on Oct. 1, 1954. He predeceased her on June 2, 1995.
Bev was known as a hard worker. She worked the family farm along side of Pete. Her first job off the farm was at the Eureka Tent and Awning of Walton, then the Sidney Center Hotel, the Wells Bridge bowling alley and the Long River Inn. Bev enjoyed tending bar the most because of all the great friends she made over the years. After she quit bartending, she began cleaning for different people, taking in laundry and ironing, well into her late 70s.
Bev was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 183 of Sidney. She played Mrs. Santa Claus at the children’s Christmas party, made baked goods for the bake sales and worked many functions. She was an excellent baker and enjoyed giving her baked goods away knowing that they would be enjoyed by whoever got them. She was an avid quilter and seamstress and made many beautiful quilts for her family and close friends. Family met a lot to Bev. She would do anything for them. Most of the families she cleaned for became part of her family.
Bev is survived by her children, Gina Wood of Walton, her children, Sonia Baragher and Jeremy Pettit; Marilyn Reynolds (Tracy) of Afton, their daughter, Heather Moore; Jeanette Short (John) of Otego, their children, Miguel, Nick, Sarah and Alex Short; Marcia (Ron) Bargher of Sidney, their children, Patrick and Carlee Bargher; son, James Steele of Sidney Center, his daughters, Bambi and Lacey Steele. Surviving sisters are Lois McCarthy of Oneonta, Dorothy Barnes of Walton, Carol (Homer) Newell of Binghamton, Sara (Paul) Lowe of Unadilla, Sandra (Ed) Schlier of Delanson, Mary Shaver of Bainbridge and Russell Shaver of Walton. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her baby, Katherine; son-in-law, Robert Wood; brothers, Arthur, Douglas and George Shaver; and sisters, Alice Aldrich and Betty Marriott.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 26, in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center. Pastor Douglas Besemer will officiate. A gathering will be held at the American Legion Post 183, Sidney, following the service.
