Irmgard Makowiecki Sheldon
MANASSAS, Va. — Irmgard Makowiecki Sheldon, born in North Harpersfield and raised in Oneonta, died March 14, 2013, in a Manassas, Va. nursing home. She was 96 years old.
Irmgard attended school in Oneonta and went on to graduate as a registered nurse from Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City in 1938.
In the spring of 1941, she entered the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was stationed in England and France during World War II.
As the wife of George Sheldon, also of Oneonta, she traveled widely to various Air Force bases. She made a career as an operating room nurse and later, supervisor with the Veterans Administration. She spent more than 20 years as supervisor for more than 23 operating rooms at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital.
Following the death of her husband, Irmgard moved to Virginia to be with her daughter, Pat, a retired lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy.
Her cremation was held in Fredericksburg, Va., on March 17. Final interment will be in the Makowiecki family plot in Plains Cemetery later this spring.
