CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. John Smith Leonard Jr., 86, passed away March 6, 2013, at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown.
He was born March 2, 1927, in the Town of Sharon, the son of John Smith and Viola (Lawyer) Leonard Sr.
He married Shirley Anne Spencer on Sept. 25, 1949, in Cherry Valley.
He was a lifelong dairy farmer at Lensego Farm, Cherry Valley since 1947. He was a member of O-H-M serving as director for six years and president for two years, a member of National and State Holstein Association and 50-year Dairylea member.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Anne Leonard of Cherry Valley; daughters, Sharon Ann Sullivan and Mary Lou (Joseph) Bolton; sons, Steven (Marilyn) Leonard, Charles (Ann) Leonard, John Jay (Susan) Leonard and Mark Leonard; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Verla Laymon; sister-in-law, Marion Leonard; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters, Bessie and Lorena; and a brother, Truman.
Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.
A memorial service will be at noon Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Jeff Smith, officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until noon preceding the service.
