Edward J. Ryan Jr.
TROY — The Rev. Edward J. Ryan Jr., 92, of Troy, passed into eternal rest on Wednesday morning, June 12, 2013, at the Teresian House in Albany.
Fr. Ryan was born in Troy and was the son of the late Edward J. and Leila Green Ryan Sr. Fr. Ryan graduated from St. John’s School in Rensselaer, St. Bonaventure College where he received his undergraduate degree and in 1947, from St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie, Yonkers, where he received his theology degree.
He was ordained in 1947, at The Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception in Albany by Bishop Edmund F. Gibbons, Bishop of Albany. After his ordination Fr. Ryan served as Chaplain at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, he was then assigned as Associate Pastor at St. Mary’s Church in Troy from April 1947 to May 1964.
In 1964, he was appointed Pastor of St. Peter’s Church in Delhi, where he was from May 1964 to June 1996. In 2001, Fr. Ryan was appointed the administrator at St. John the Baptist Church in Walton and Holy Family Church in Downsville a position he held until his second retirement in February 2002.
In addition to his parish assignments during his 66 years of priestly service, Fr. Ryan was also very involved with CYO work, campus ministry, vocation recruitment and serving as Chaplain to The Troy Police Department.
Fr. Ryan was predeceased by his brother, John Thomas Ryan; and his sister, Eleanor Ryan Dignum.
He is survived by his nephew, Kevin Ryan; and his nieces, Kathleen Ryan Whimple, Michele Dignum and Jacqueline Tobin. He is also survived by his great-nieces, Leah Tobin and Melissa Whimple; and his great-nephew, Ryan Tobin.
The Funeral Liturgy for Fr. Ryan will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2013, at Sacred Heart Church in Troy with Bishop Howard J. Hubbard, Bishop of Albany, as the Principal Celebrant.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may call at the Church from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Fr. Ryan will be interred next to his mother in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Troy. The reception of Fr. Ryan’s body will take place at Sacred Heart Church in Troy at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2013.
The family of Fr. Ryan are most grateful to the fourth floor, A-wing staff at the Teresian House, the Carmelite sisters and priests associated with the facility, the medical team, and Louise (his devoted and faithful friend) for their loving care, compassion and prayers during Father’s most difficult days. God certainly does have angels on earth.
