WALTON — Burel Gomillion, 91, of Walton, passed away on June 16, 2013, in Covington, Ga.
He was born in Ridge Spring, S.C., Nov. 15, 1921. He grew up in Hempstead and was a graduate of Hempstead High School. Burel served in the United States Navy as a pharmacist mate at Montford Point in Camp Johnson, N.C.
He attended Wilberforce University, Howard University and Columbia University where he received his degree. He relocated to Walton, where he resided for more than 40 years. He retired from the United States Postal Service in Oneonta.
Hobbies included traveling, playing tennis and collecting artwork from his grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Norina Mosby, Daria Ingram, Tracy Byrd, Burel Gomillion, Naomi Thompson, Milledge Gomillion and Joy Stephenson; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Naomi Marsh, Lorraine Bythewood and Jean Murphy; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 28, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Huntington. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton.
