LOUISA, Va. — Bernard K. Cushman, 89, of Louisa, Va., passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, after a short illness.

Bernie was born on March 17, 1925, in Trenton, to Gladys Clark and Clyde Cushman. He graduated from Richfield Springs High School and SUNY Cobleskill.

Bernie was an avid sportsman and hunted deer and turkey for 72 years. He taught hunter safety both in New York and Virginia for more than 20 years and was active with the Fisheries and Wildlife Program at SUNY Cobleskill.

For many years Bernie was the president of the Schoharie County Conservation Association where he played a key role in the establishment of the Dorwin Hamm Scholarship Fund. Bernie was a member of the Schoharie County Pistol League and on the Richmondville Team; he also was a member of the Middleburgh Rod and Gun Club and a member of the archery team.

He worked for Pettibone Corporation before becoming planting foreman for 10 years at SUNY Cobleskill.

He raised beef and dairy heifers on the McChesney Farm on Hill Road before he and his family moved to Virginia in 1993, where Bernie worked at Louisa Hardware for five years.

He was active with the Wesleyan Church in Cobleskill and the Memorial Baptist Church of Louisa, Va.

Bernie is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jeanne Stahl Cushman; and children, Gary Cushman and wife Nellie, Beatrice Cushman Dennis, Daisy Cushman, Kit Cushman and wife Dawn, John Cushman and wife Wendy, Paul Cushman and wife Viola, Jennifer Cushman and Jeremy Cushman and wife Anne; brother, John Platt and wife Loretta; and sister, Georgiann Platt; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Platt; and two sisters, Beatrice Cushman Dyn and Shirley Platt Broniszewski. He was also predeceased by two children, Bernard Clyde Cushman and Ruth Cushman Jackson.

Calling hours will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2014, with the funeral at 11 a.m. at the Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel St., Cobleskill, with interment following in the Lawyersville Cemetery.
