COOPERSTOWN — Joseph G. Begley, 70, of Cooperstown, passed away on Nov. 27, 2012, at home with his family by his side.

He was born on Oct. 19, 1942, in St. Ann’s Hospital, NYC, to the late Joseph F. and Teresa (McCoy) Begley, of counties Roscommon and Armagh, Ireland, respectively.

Joe is survived by his loving partner, Linda K. Rutherford; his children and grandchildren: son, Matthew B. Begley and Julie Frazzitta-Hall and her sons, Finnegan and Cian; son, Sean P. Begley (Major ARNG) and his wife, Patty and their sons, Cael, Liam and Quinn; daughter, Margaret K. Begley and husband Orest Hrycak, and their sons, Peter and Arthur; son, Liam O. Begley (Captain USMC) and his wife, Maria and their sons, Ronan and Anton; and sons, Joseph C. Begley (Captain USMC) and Patrick B. Begley. Joe is also survived by his brother, James P. Begley; and sister, Catherine A. Begley; his brother-in-law, Donald Dowd; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Michael J. Begley; his sister, Teresa M. Dowd; and by three infant children.

Joe grew up in Lindenhurst on Long Island’s south shore. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School, and Mount St. Michael High School, Bronx.

In 1961, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served in the 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force until 1965, earning the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.

After his enlistment, Joe attended the Suffolk County Police Academy and served with the Suffolk County Police Department of Long Island, as a Patrolman from 1966 to 1970. He joined the New York State Troopers in 1970, graduating with the 119th class which was the second class held at the State Police Academy in Albany. Joe was awarded the Superintendent’s Award for being the top marksman in his class.
