Shirley (Rivanera) Morrison

UNADILLA — Shirley (Rivanera) Morrison, of Unadilla, passed away on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich, following a brief illness.

Shirley was born in Clifton, N.J., on Dec. 23, 1923, the daughter of Attilio and Elizabeth Rivanera. She grew up in Hobart and was valedictorian of the first graduating class of South Kortright Central School. Her illustration of the school’s mascot was the cover for the school’s first yearbook.

It was in Hobart that she met and married Harold Morrison who predeceased her.

Shirley was a purchasing agent for York Modern in Unadilla, retiring when she was in her 80’s.

Her interests and talents included painting, drawing, and photography. She also belonged to several chat rooms with friends in all parts of the world. She loved to travel. Her last trip to Italy was with her brother, sister and several nieces and nephews, to visit the birthplace of her father and to become acquainted with the Rivanera family in Italy.

Shirley was a member of the Unadilla Women’s Club and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney.

Shirley is survived by her children, Barbara Armour of Severn, Md.; Joyce Morrison and her husband, Bruce Roth of Northhampton, Mass.; Thomas Morrison of Unadilla; her grandson and his wife, Aaron and Tennille Sevigney of Naples, Fla.; her brother, Richard Rivanera of Endwell; and her sister, Doris Simonson of Gainesville, Fla. Also included in her family are several nieces and nephews including Lisa Poole and her husband, Charlie of Newark Valley.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, when the family will be in attendance. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sidney. Father Gordon Polenz will officiate. Interment will follow in Evergreen Hills Cemetery, Unadilla.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad, Clifton Street, Unadilla, NY 13849, in Shirley’s memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., of Unadilla.
