BAINBRIDGE — Barbara G. Sowles, 80, of Bainbridge, passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at A.O. Fox Nursing home in Oneonta.
She was born June 27, 1932, in New Haven, Conn., the daughter of Edward and Helen (Demerest) Gross. Barbara was married on Feb. 20, 1960, in Unadilla to Lloyd C. Sowles Sr., who predeceased her on April 29, 2009.
Barbara had lived in Bainbridge since 1970, where at one time attended the Bainbridge United Methodist Church for many years. She had worked in the cafeteria in Bainbridge-Guilford Central School for many years and prior to that for Dr. Williams in Bainbridge. She enjoyed being a wife, mom and grandma to her family as well as going to NASCAR races with her husband. She also loved her perennial garden. Barbara had been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Bainbridge.
She is survived by her son, Lloyd “Skip” Sowles Jr. of Afton; her daughter and husband, Sharon and William Laing of Bainbridge; a sister and her husband, Alice and Richard Piper; sister and brother-in law, Ellen Smith and John Short; sister-in-law, Brenda Gross ; four grandchildren, Neven and his wife Melanie Laing; Katie Mae Laing, Craig Laing and Benjamin Laing; and three great-grandchildren Connor, Dixie and Sadie. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was predeceased by her brother, Edward Gross.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m. when the family will be present. Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice in Barbara’s memory.
