MILFORD — Nancy A. Atwell, 73, formerly of Lougheed Road in the town of Milford, died Saturday evening Dec. 8, 2012, at Otsego Manor with family at her side.
Born May 5, 1939 in Oneonta, she was raised on her family’s farm on Gardnertown Road in the town of New Lisbon, she was the daughter of Elmer and Afa (Eldred) Waters. She married Gerald H. Atwell in Oneonta on Jan. 15, 1956. They owned and operated a dairy farm on Lougheed Road in the town of Milford where they raised their six children. Nancy also helped to support her family by working outside the home, and for 33 years was a dietary cook at the former Meadows Nursing Home.
Notwithstanding her work outside the home, Nancy was first and foremost a mother and homemaker for her family. She was proud of and loved her family unconditionally and she especially enjoyed babysitting and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Nancy was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Gerald, in 2002, her son Randy in 1995, and her two brothers, Edward Waters of New Lisbon and Roger Waters of Oneonta.
She is survived by her three sons, all of the Milford area, Chuck (Marilyn) Atwell, Rick Atwell (Sherry Bedford), and Gene (Bernadette) Atwell; her two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn (Thomas) Finch of Brackney, Pa., and Lisa (Douglas) Pegos of Port Crane. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Bonnie Meyers, Kelly, Eric and Melissa Atwell, Jamie Deloe, Danielle and Nicole Finch, Steven and Breanna Bernhardt, Randy Atwell, Corey and Brian Atwell; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Inge Waters of Florida and Betty Waters of Oneonta; a daughter-in-law, Judy Atwell of Middleburg, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown. A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. Stephen D. Fournier pastor of the Milford Center Community Bible Church officiating. Burial in the Milford Cemetery will follow the service.
The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Catskill Area Hospice and to the staff at Otsego Manor, especially those on Serenity Place, for their kind and always welcoming manner and loving care.
