MARGARETVILLE — Marie L. Shafer of Margaretville, died March 11, 2013.
She was born May 16, 1922, in Sayerville, N.J., the daughter of George and Augusta Long.
After graduating from St. Peters High School in New Brunswick, N.J., in 1940, Marie was an Optical Fire Control technician for the U.S. government at the Rairtan Arsenal in Metucheon N.J. It was during this time that she met Robert W. Shafer of Roxbury. They were married May 14, 1944, in New Brunswick, N.J.
Marie was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Catskill 3500 hiking club (#287), and a ham radio operator (KE2KR). She was one of the founders of the Margaretville Radio Club. Along with her daily walks, she enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting and crocheting.
She was predeceased by her husband Bob on Sept. 17, 2001. She also was predeceased by her brother George Long and her sister Ruth Bellante.
Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Shafer of Hamburg, Joan and her husband Thomas Roberts of Englewood, Fla. and her brother Joseph Long, of Somerset, NJ and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no prior visitation. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thurs. March 14, 2013 at Hyne Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Paul Catena Officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Maries name may be made to Delaware County Senior Meals or Margaretville Memorial Hospital.
