COOPERSTOWN — David Herchel Bridger Sr., 79, died on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, surrounded by his family at his home in Cooperstown.

He was born on July 5, 1934, in Middlefield, to Orlando and Nellie (Page) Bridger. David attended the one-room schoolhouse in Middlefield before moving to Cooperstown where he attended Cooperstown High School. He left high school to join the Army and he served in Korea.

After his time in the Army, he returned to the Cooperstown area and married his first wife, Gretchen Stevens. They had two sons, David H. Bridger Jr. and Steven Page Bridger.

He married Marietta Ferris on Jan. 15, 1978. They had one daughter, Emera Louise Bridger.

David was well-known in this area through his work as a roofer and siding contractor. At one time, he was also a member of the Cooperstown Fire Department and the Cooperstown VFW. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and watching baseball.

David had a charming smile, an infectious laugh and a kind heart.

He is survived by his wife, Marietta (Ferris) Bridger of Cooperstown; his sons, David Bridger, Jr. of Cobleskill and Steven Bridger (Cheryl) of Maryland; his daughter, Emera Bridger Wilson (Ian Wilson) of Syracuse; a grandson, Kyle; and two stepgranddaughters, Caitlin and Ashley; sisters, Hilda Pomeroy of Fulton, Elizabeth (Betty) O’Brien of Cooperstown, Mildred (Millie) Jennings of Cooperstown, Cora Petrucco of Cortland, Wanda Layman of Toddsville, Evelyn (Evie) Gray, Lois Smith of Toddsville and Joan Weiner of Toddsville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Orlando and Nellie; his first wife, Gretchen Stevens Moore; two sisters, Gladys Welch and Wilma Dyer; and his brothers, Frederick, Chester and Herman Bridger.

There will be a celebration of life at the Hartwick Seminary Fire Hall at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23.
