Herta G. Kunik
COOPERSTOWN — Herta G. Kunik, 87, of Cooperstown, formerly of Schenevus and Teaneck, N.J., died Wednesday evening, April 24, 2013, at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown.
Born Dec. 5, 1925, in Cologne, Germany, Herta met and later married Nicholas Kunik a U.S. serviceman who was serving with the occupation forces in Germany following World War II.
They moved to Teaneck, N.J., where they raised their five children; their two sons, Ernest (Lucy) Kunik of Tennessee and Nicholas (Mary) Kunik of New Jersey, and their three daughters, Sylvia Lustberg of Teaneck, N.J., and Doris and Jane Kunik of Pierstown.
Herta was a homemaker “extraordinaire” who loved knitting, painting, and cooking as well as providing and caring for her family. Her kind, compassionate and nurturing nature was well known and was especially evidenced by her ever ready willingness to act as a foster parent for children with Down syndrome. Upon her retirement, after 25 years of providing foster care, she was honored for having provided care to over 100 children with Down syndrome.
A few years after the death of her husband in 1990, Herta retired to the Schenevus area and more recently moved to the Cooperstown area.
Graveside services and burial in the family plot in Teaneck, N.J., will be private.
For those who so desire, the family suggests that donations in Herta’s memory be made to Northern New Jersey Down Syndrome Alliance, P.O. Box 453, Wychoff, NJ 07481.
Arrangements are under the guidance of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown.
