EAST SPRINGFIELD — Muriel (Merle) B. Young passed away peacefully on Sept. 12, 2013, at her home with her family by her side.
Merle was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Edwin E. Young; her son, James E. Young; parents, Jared Albert and Crystal Buddle; brothers, Ralph (Marjorie) and Frank (Dorothy) Buddle; sister-in-law, Myrtle Cope (Lewis); and brother-in-law, Robert Young.
Merle is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Ruth Philley and son-in-law, Frederic Philley; her granddaughter, Taryn Masi (Chris); her granddaughter, Leah Rose Masi; nephews and nieces, Arnold Cope (Tamara), Robert Buddle (Gene’ve), Allan Buddle (Ann), Wesley Buddle (Linda), Barbara Buddle, Christine Griffiths (Barry), Linda Putnam; caregivers, July Kolstad and Janet McCarty; and her friend, Harry Kineke.
Merle was born in Springfield on Dec. 3, 1920, and graduated from Springfield Central School in 1938. With a passion for cooking, she served meals to many Springfield students in the school cafeteria and to customers at the Otsego Diner during the summer.
With her dear friend, Barbara Weaver, Merle worked tirelessly fundraising for the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield and for the CVS Music Scholarship Fund. Their contributions were celebrated by the community when they led the 2011 Springfield 4th of July Parade as Grand Marshals.
Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Springfield Presbyterian Church with Pastor Susan Burdsall officiating. Interment will follow in the Springfield Cemetery.
