Mary Grace Calcasola
MARGARETVILLE — Mary Grace Calcasola, 89, passed away peacefully on 13th day of November, 2013, at her home in Margaretville. She was in the company of loving daughter, Carmella, son-in-law, Bart and her grandchildren, Eric Sean, Karyn Janelle and their good friend, Frieda Suess.
“May your soul already be in heaven an hour, before the devil knows your gone” was recited in her honor. This day we mourn the loss of a wonderful loving mother, grandmother and person.
She was born on Aug. 15, 1924, in Brooklyn, to John Dugan and Grace Steingoetter Dugan. Mary grew up in Brooklyn.
She graduated from Manhattan Trade School for Girls in New York City in 1941. After high school her mother fell ill and Mary had to raise her four siblings, Helen, John, Mickey and Carol.
Mary began work for Kaiser Mfg. as a machine operator on uniforms for the war effort for three years. Then as a homemaker caring for her brothers and sisters and father later on her daughter, after 12 years she returned to work at a Brooklyn sponge factory. She went on to Tilden High School, where she worked in food service for several years. Finally, she worked at TIAA/CREF as a receptionist until she retired on Sept. 1, 1986, after 15 years. She also worked in the cafeteria at Margaretville High School for a short time.
Mary married Anthony Calcasola in 1944, in the Church of St. John the Baptist in Brooklyn. They were happily married for 69 years. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Church.
She enjoyed housekeeping, gardening and reading. She was active with the local seniors group and was the bus coordinator for senior shopping trips.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Grace Dugan; siblings, John Dugan, Carol and (Patrick) Larkin.
Mary is survived by her spouse, Anthony Calcasola of Margaretville; her daughter, Carmella, (Bart) Basile of Roxbury; her brother, Mickey, (Renate) Dugan of Temecula, Calif.; her sister, Helen, (Buddy) Wolfe of Piscataway, N.J.; her grandchildren, Eric Sean Basile, Karyn Janelle Basile, (Aaron) Rion; her great-grandchildren, Sean Ryan, Robert William; and her nieces and nephews and other relatives.
