CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Helen J. Rury, 89, of Cherry Valley, passed away on Nov. 25, 2013, at her home.

She was born Dec. 5, 1923, in Oneonta, the daughter of Floyd and Gertrude (Bowen) Eckler. Helen grew up in Middlefield Center. She attended the one-room schoolhouse where her mother Gertrude was the teacher. She graduated from Cooperstown High School Class of 1940.

Helen and Francis Rury were united in marriage on June 28, 1947, at the Little Church Around The Corner in New York City. They enjoyed 66 years of marriage.

Helen’s love of books and reading led to her becoming the librarian of the Cherry Valley Memorial Library. She later became the school librarian at the former Cherry Valley Central School, retiring in 1987, after 21 years of service.

Since 1988, she assisted Francis in the operation of the Rury’s Food Store in Cherry Valley.

During her time in Cherry Valley, Helen was involved in several organizations. She served as the Village and Town Historian for many years. She was a member of the Cherry Valley Historical Association and the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church. She was a past member of the Cherry Valley Fireman’s Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Helen enjoyed her trip down Main Street this summer with Francis as the Grand Marshals of the Cherry Valley Fire Departments 200th celebration.

She is survived by her husband, Francis; and sons, Edward (Karen) of Cherry Valley and Gregory (Rebecca) of Moravia; grandchildren, Sarah, Jessica, Jonathan (Mavra), Melissa (Ben) and Kristin; great-grandchildren, Cameran, Elliot, Aiden and Nathan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Malcolm and Sylvia Boyce, Florence Reed, Kenneth Bailey; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; and sister, Florence.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at the United Methodist of Cherry Valley. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Lyman Johnson, burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery.
