Richard J. Schuyler Sr.
NAPLES, Fla. — Richard J. Schuyler Sr., 79, of Naples, Fla., died Oct. 29, 2013.
He was born in Albany on April 1, 1934, the only child of James and Veronica (Lamberson) Schuyler.
He married Jeanne Marie Beams on April 2, 1956, in Oneonta.
His early years were spent in Schenectady where he was active in Boy Scouts and musical groups. He played violin with the Schenectady Youth Orchestra, also brass instruments and violin while in high school. Dick received a B.S. in Music Education from Hartwick College and an M.S. in Music Education from Potsdam State University.
Dick taught instrumental music for the Oneonta School District for 35 years. His teaching goal was to have students love music and set proper standards for life. While at O.H.S. he directed the Concert Band, Marching Band, Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble as well as other musical groups. He was always thrilled to arrange and conduct the Pit Band for O.H.S. musicals. He spent several years as Head of the Music Department.
Dick directed the Oneonta Community Band for many years and played in bands in Cooperstown, Norwich and Bainbridge. He also played in the Catskill Valley Wind Ensemble. As a member of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), he was an area delegate and also an adjudicator. He held memberships in M.E.N.C. and A.F. of M.
Dick and Jeanne retired to Naples, Fla., to enjoy nature in the Everglades and the beautiful sunsets. He was a member of the Naples Concert Band, Naples Orchestra and Chorus, in addition to other small groups.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; son, Richard Jr., (Toni); daughter, Kathleen Labonge (Carl); and grandchildren, Alec and Natalie Labonge.
A memorial Mass was held Nov. 7, in Naples at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.
