NEW BERLIN — Peter C. Virtell, 86, of New Berlin, died peacefully Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home with his family by his side.
He was born Feb. 13, 1928, in Oneonta, the son of Lewis and Lillian (Wright) Virtell.
He married Elna Harrington on June 23, 1951, at the United Methodist Church in Edmeston.
Pete managed Agway Energy Products for 38 years, retiring in 1987. He was a 60-year member of the Phoebus Lodge F & AM. He served as the Rotary President, was a Paul Harris Fellow and coached for the Little League and Pony League. Golf was an all-time favorite sport and for the past 20 years he continued to play all winter in Florida. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father-in-law, Carl, and son, Mark.
Pete is survived by his wife, Elna; his son, Mark; his sister, Bernice and husband Art Strong; his sister-in-laws, Betty and Judy Virtell; his special cousin, Laura Halpin of Chase Nursing Home; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
His two brothers, Jim and Paul Virtell predeceased Pete.
Calling hours will be from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the Houk-Johnson-Terry Funeral Home. Masonic services will be conducted at 2 p.m. followed by the funeral service with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, officiating.
Interment will be in the spring in Burlington Flats Cemetery.
