GRAND GORGE — Martin W. Lawrence, 78, of Grand Gorge, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at the A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
Marty was born April 11, 1935, at Johnstown, Pa., the son of Martin and Frances (Rose) Lawrence.
He married Carol Jacob on July 11, 1961, at Bronxville. Marty graduated from Penn State University on March 23, 1963.
He was in the U.S. Army from 1957 until 1961 and served in Korea during his enlistment.
Before entering the education field, Marty worked as a milk tester in Pennsylvania. He taught conservation as an ag teacher at Gilboa and Roxbury central schools and later taught conservation and operated heavy equipment at NCOC in Grand Gorge. He spent more than 35 years in the education field. He served as town justice for Roxbury from 1992 to 2003.
Marty was an active member of the Sacred Heart Parish and St. Philip Neri Church in Grand Gorge. He had many hobbies including watching his children play sports, which he enjoyed the most. He also liked camping, salt water fishing, gardening, cooking and playing cards.
Marty is survived by his wife, Carol Lawrence; children, Martin A. Lawrence, Jeffrey Lawrence, Cynthia Lawrence and William (Cynthia) Lawrence; grandchildren, James, Alex, Madeleine, Molly; great-grandchild, Haley; and brothers, Robert and Richard Lawrence.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, at St. Philip Neri R.C. Church, Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Michael Cambi, celebrant.
Committal services will be at a later date.
Donations in memory of Martin W. Lawrence may be made to the memorial fund at St. Philip Neri R.C. Church, Grand Gorge.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
