Jane Eyre Garlick

ONEONTA — Jane Eyre Garlick, 79, a longtime Oneonta resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at the Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

She was born on Sept. 17, 1934, in Franklin, the daughter of the late Harold P. and Mildred H. (Sisson) Robinson. While Jane was still very young, her family moved to Oneonta, where she attended Oneonta schools.

On April 26, 1951, she married Phillip J. Garlick and they celebrated 51 years together until Phillip’s passing in 2002.

Jane worked for over 30 years as a tailor for the Fashion Clothes store in Oneonta.

Her faith in God was a very important part of her life. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oneonta, where she also taught Sunday School for many years.

Jane was a kind and compassionate woman, with a very generous and forgiving heart. She was a natural caregiver who watched over, prayed for, and cared for family members and friends in need.

She loved dogs, and had many furry companions throughout her life. Jane also held a deep appreciation for the more simple things in life, like the splendor of a fragrant flower, the beauty of an afternoon sky, or the joy of receiving a simple smile from a stranger along her way. She loved old movies, Christmas trees, chocolate, and lunch on the patio.

She had a small flower garden she would visit often to pick a small, fresh bouquet of flowers for her kitchen window. Always up early, she would marvel at the morning sky often calling her daughters to share how beautiful the sunrise had been. She was a wise, courageous, and intuitive woman whose most significant message was to forgive, be kind, and pray.

Jane is survived by her daughters, Diana L. Covell and her husband, Larry of Oneonta, Audrey Ann Garlick of Oneonta, and Kim L. McElroy and her husband, James of Otego; her grandchildren, Debbie L. Baranska and her husband, Timothy of Clayton, N.C., Dustin St. Onge and fiancée Miranda Halstead of Richfield Springs, Ashley N. White of Laurens, and Heather A. White of Otego; two great-grandchildren, Brooke A. Baranska, and Nova-Lei St. Onge; and her best friend and beloved companions, her dog, Lacy, and cat, Muffins. She is also survived by her beloved friend and sister-in-law, Marjorie Robinson of Binghamton; and sister-in-law, Margaret Garlick of Oneonta; her nephews, Richard Robinson of Binghamton and Donald Robinson of Elmira; and her cousins, Howard Robinson and his wife, Margaret, Richard Garlick and his wife, Karen, Marilyn Kelsey and Fredrick and Rodger Miller of Florida.
