Donald L. Kerr
DAVENPORT — Donald L. Kerr, 71, of Davenport, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
He was born Dec. 20, 1942, in Stamford, the son of Lauren and Florence (Sloan) Kerr.
He married Dawn Darling in 1964. On Jan. 4, 2014, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Don was a lifetime resident of North Kortright. He was a graduate of Stamford Central School, Class of 1961 and Albany Business College.
Donald wore many hats and was a firm believer in multi-tasking. In years past, he worked with his father under Kerr Trucking on the milk run and hauling coal, moving on to the V & K Body Shop and sales of Scorpion snowmobiles. He was also an active volunteer in the local fire departments.
He was elected town supervisor for the Town of Kortright; coordinator of the Delaware County Food Bank; served on the Catskill Rail Committee (Rails to Trails project from Grand Gorge to South Kortright); worked with the operations department of the former Wilber Bank; and was a longtime member and treasurer for the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church and North Kortright Cemetery Association.
Don enjoyed many walks and snowshoeing around Gilbert Lake with his wife. He and the family had many camping trips and over-the-road adventures. He was a fan of the New York Yankees, NASCAR and Fonda Speedway. In most recent years, he had discovered his natural “green thumb” and found a love for books.
He had special times with his granddaughter attending school events and working together restocking the food bank shelves. Family dogs always had a special place in his heart. He always found time to play ball with Sophie, Ruby and Bruno.
He proved to accept life’s challenges and bonuses with equal grace.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn (Darling); and blessed with three daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa (Jeff) Morell, Debi (Jim) Moore and Sarah (John) Cardwell; his granddaughter, Jessica Moore; his sister and brother-in-law, Doris (Robert) Hedman; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces; nephews and cousins.
