ONEONTA — Anne Wilkens, 90, a resident of Oneonta since 1989, passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at the Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.
She was born on July 22, 1922, in Pinneberg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the daughter of the late Johann Hinrich and Wilhelmine (Hadeler) Intelmann. Anne came to the United States of America and became a naturalized U.S. citizen on Nov. 27, 1936 and lived in New York City, where she met her husband, Henry C. Wilkens.
Anne and Henry were married on July 31, 1944, in Manhattan and soon after operated a delicatessen until 1951. They then moved to Bovina Center in Delaware County, where they bought a farm the previous year. They worked the large 600 acre dairy farm until 1969, while their children, Louise Anne Wilkens-Leary and Walter Henry Wilkens, went to school and graduated from South Kortright Central School. The family moved to Oneonta on Dec. 6, 1989.
In Oneonta, Anne and her husband purchased real estate property, which they managed until their retirement. They celebrated 68 years of marriage until Henry’s passing on Feb. 3, 1998.
Anne is survived by her children, Louise Anne Wilkens-Leary of Oneonta, Walter Henry Wilkens and his wife, Tinny of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Rachael Anne Leary-Elias and her husband, Corey of Sidney, Maine, Stephanie Louise Leary of Portland, Maine, Andrew Walter Wilkens of Plattsburg and Anissa Tinny Wilkens of Oneonta. She also leaves behind many relatives and friends.
A private, family funeral service took place on Saturday, April 27, 2013 and she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
