Earl B. Butler
GILBERTSVILLE _ Earl B. Butler, 89, of Gilbertsville, passed away quietly in the early morning of Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at the Beechtree Care Center in Ithaca.
Born May 27, 1921, he was the son of Bert G. and Ida Dora Butler and was raised in a large farm family of seven children.
He married Virginia Soule on Dec. 14, 1947, in Otego. They shared 56 years together until her passing in March of 2004.
He retired from Otsego County Highway Department after many years of dedicated service. He was well known for his strong work ethic, love of gardening and sense of humor.
He is survived by a large family including daughters, Diana and (Tom) Miller of Owego, Dora Butler of Bedford, Va., Pat McCann of Sidney and Laura and (Karl) Zimmerman of Castle Creek; one son, Jim and (Barb) Butler of Gilbertsville; two sisters, Margaret Gaughan of Morris and Betty Goodspeed of Garrattsville; and a brother, Dick Butler of California and their families. The legacy of his family continues to grow with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and extended family members.
He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia; his parents, Bert and Ida Dora Butler; his eldest son, Ron; son-in-law, Skip McCann; infant granddaughter, Emily; and three brothers, Louis, Ralph and Don.
Calling hours will be at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. A funeral service will be held immediately following at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating.
Interment will be in the spring at Brookside Cemetery.
