---- — Martha Mader Schober

GHENT — Martha Mader Schober departed this life on Jan. 4, 2013, at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington, Mass.

Martha was born on July 28, 1920, in New York City. She spent her childhood in Manhattan and her early adulthood in Rye, but the majority of her life was spent living on a farm in rural upstate New York.

Her parents were Berhardt Mader, an immigrant from Germany, and Theresia Mader (nee Geschrey,) an immigrant from Austria-Hungary.

Martha was graduated from Rye High School in Westchester County, and from the Fashion School of Design in New York City.

On July 22, 1941, Martha was married to Henry J. Schober, an immigrant from Austria. They lived for several years in Rye, where Henry was employed at the Westchester Country Club.

Martha and Henry’s greatest joy was the arrival of their daughter, Gretel, and son, Hansel. In 1947, Martha, Henry, and the children along with Martha’s parents moved to a small farm in Columbia County.

For the next 10 years, Henry needed to continue his work at the country club, but even in the worst weather, always made the trip upstate to spend time with Martha and his family on his days off. During this time, Martha took the initiative to learn about farming and gradually built up what would eventually become a large herd of Holstein cattle.

In 1958, Henry was able to finally rejoin Martha on a full-time basis, and the family purchased additional land and buildings from a neighboring farm.

Henry died in 1988, and Martha continued to help her son, Hansel, and his family to manage the farm.

Martha also ran for public office and served her community as a member of the town board and later on the planning board. Martha was an active member of Spencertown Presbyterian Church and played an important role in sustaining the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hillsdale.

In addition to her husband, Martha was predeceased by a grandson, John Henry in 1986.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Gretel (Frank) Bachler; son, Hansel (Rosemarie) Schober. She is also survived by grandchildren, Paul Todd (Lizette) Bachler, Krista (Ken) Segreto, Matthew (Lisa) Schober, David (Tracy) Schober, Christopher (Jen) Schober, Suzanne (Rich) Riley, Stephen (Meg) Schober, Deborah (Chris) Wren and Samantha Schober. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Katerina, Paul, Carlo, Michael, Crissy, Kieran, Eowyn, Aoife, Saoirse, Henry, Caleb and Jack. She is also survived by her nephew, Walter (Kathleen) Schober; and grandnephew, Eric (Amy) Schober; and grandniece, Christine Schober.

Visiting hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at French, Gifford, Preiter and Blasl Funeral Home in Chatham.

A memorial service will at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at St. Peter’s Church in Spencertown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peters Church, P.O. Box 14, Spencertown, NY 12165.
