MORRIS — Gordon R. Nesbitt Sr., 91, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, after a brief illness, at home in Morris.

Born in Holly to Leslie and Elizabeth Nesbitt, he was married to Margaret (DeRycke) Nesbitt for 64 years.

Gordon proudly served the Army Air Corps during World War II servicing B29s as an avionics technician. After his military service, he attended and graduated from Cornell University with a degree in agronomy.

He retired in 1979, from the USDA Soil Conversation Service after 30 years, ending his career in Otsego County. He was a part-time farmer from 1952 until 2012, and loved his farm in Groton.

He was an active member of the Lansing Methodist Church for many years and helped select the site for their current location overlooking Cayuga Lake. His wife and children have many memories of life on the farm.

Margaret and Gordon enjoyed spending winters in Roswell, N.M., for many years.

He is survived by Margaret; five children, Melanie Mackey (Walter),Cocoa Beach, Fla., Mary Sloan (Daniel), Gilbertsville, Celeste Ryan (Tecumsah), Cooperstown, David Nesbitt, Tampa, Fla., and Nancy Nesbitt, Anaheim, Calif.; daughters-in-law, Molly and Susan; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, AdaNell, 95, Palmyra; five sisters- in-law; three brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Lucille Johnston; two sons, Gordon Jr. and Leslie Nesbitt; and one grandson, Eric Nesbitt.

There will be a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church, 113 Marion Ave., (Route 51) in Gilbertsville, NY 13776 at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, officiated by the Rev. Mark Piedmonte.

The family would like to express gratitude for the special care Gordon received from Catskill Area Hospice and Audrey Allis.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Finger Lakes Land Trust or Catskill Area Hospice.
