---- — Francine D. Fecteau
WALTON — Francine D. Fecteau, 60, of Walton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Francine Danielle Fecteau was born on May 1, 1952, in Albuquerque, N.M., a daughter of the late Albert Joseph and Faith (Korray) Fecteau; the first child of what would be a large and raucous Catholic family.
These experiences shaped her world view and developed her natural instincts toward caring for others. Her family remembers her most for an unalloyed generosity and devotion to family values which colored her professional life as well.
She taught the most challenged of the challenged, seeing children’s disabilities as only a temporary barrier to their inevitable successes; continually going above and beyond the call of duty with emotional and physical investments, breaching the boundaries of what could have been required of any teacher and even beyond that, adopting a child, Julian Fecteau. And even though she eschewed attention, she was recognized as a Utica Fox News Teacher of the Week in 2007.
She was convinced that no child was beyond reach and all deserved a chance to learn and succeed. As the years accrued, her focus never changed. If a kid had an obstacle, there was no distance too great that she wouldn’t go to remove it. She leaves behind a grand tradition of devoted family members and students who learned to succeed in spite of what the universe told them. We should all be so lucky.
Francine is survived by her son, Julian S. Fecteau of Afton; her brothers and sister, Vincent P. Fecteau of East Syracuse, Peter A. Fecteau of Colorado Springs, Colo., Nicole L. Freeman of Palmer Lake, Colo., Alexis D. Fecteau of Seattle, Wash., and Francis C. Fecteau of Salt Lake City, Utah; her longtime friend and roommate, Vicki F. Marquart of Walton; her aunt, Cecile Sullivan of Webster, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, at St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. David Wm. Mickiewicz officiating.
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Francine’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.
Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
