Gary Edward Calta

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Gary Edward Calta, born Staten Island, March 31, 1944. Lost his courageous battle with cancer on June 7, 2013, at Otsego Manor, Cooperstown.

Son of Anita Viani Calta Grecco, Walden.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ellen Ford Calta, Springfield Center; and sons, Scott Edward and wife Jennifer of Richfield Springs, and John Michael and wife Stacey of Middletown; five grandchildren, Mary, Sarah and Jacob of Richfield Springs and Aliceon and Garrison of Windsor; sister, Diane Calta Amundsen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was a 1961, graduate of Valley Central School, Montgomery; AAS SUNY Farmingdale, BS SUNY Oswego and MS Vocational Education from Montclair State University, New Jersey. He was licensed by the NYS Insurance Department and held a Notary Public Certificate for more than 40 years.

Gary was a decorated U.S. Army Vietnam Era veteran, former Minisink Valley Industrial Arts teacher, co-owner of the H.J. Hockenbery Insurance Agency for 32 years with his wife, Mary Ellen.

Gary was an active volunteer in his community for 45 years; Rutgers Engine Co., Minisink Valley Kiwanis, Westtown Victorious 4-H Club, elder in the Presbyterian Church USA, Orange County Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Woodworking program, George Smith American Legion Post 1607 and many other organizations benefited from his fundraising efforts for them.

Gary believed in community service and his wish is that all young people learn the value of giving back to their community in any way that they can.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and always willing to encourage our youth to learn safety of all outdoor sports. When retired, he relocated to Springfield Center, and enjoyed the 1793, restored post and beam home they found. The gardens were being restored and the community welcomed him. His bluebird houses were put up and cared for and bluebirds are nesting this year.
