COOPERSTOWN — Shirley L. Banta, 91, passed away on Aug. 18, 2013. She was born on July 11, 1922, the daughter of Stanley and Clare (Stone) Earl, in Wells Bridge.
She graduated from Unadilla Central School, class of 1940 and attended Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vt., where she received her bachelor’s degree.
She taught language in Bainbridge, from 1944 to 1947. She took time away from teaching to have their four children. She then taught French in Springfield and Cherry Valley from 1965 to1988. She spent the summer of 1968 studying in France.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, worked as a volunteer at schools, the hospital, was a member of the Meadowlarks, Women’s Club of Cooperstown and the Garden Discussion Group (not the Garden Club). Her activities and interests included travel, gardening, Fellowship of Faithfuls, skating at Interskate 88, family and music.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Banta of Cooperstown; and four children, sons, Allen Banta of Binghamton, Nicholas Banta of Phoenix, daughters, Kathryn L. Reinhardt of Apex, N.C., and Marilyn Pettys of Westerly, R.I.; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 21, at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown.
