Robert Remington Patterson
ONEONTA — Robert Remington Patterson died at Bassett Hospital on Aug. 18, 2013.
He was born in Hartford, Conn., on Nov. 4, 1920, to Ethel and Herbert Patterson, the third of three sons. He spent much of his childhood in Bayside, returning to Hartford to finish high school.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a signal man on Merchant Marine ships during World War II. He was honorably discharged and returned to Hartford, where he married Irma Finnell in 1945. They settled in East Granby, Conn., after the birth of their second child. He was an active member of the community for more than 30 years.
Bob was a printer by trade and spent his career at the Bond Press in Hartford. Mostly, he enjoyed his family, fishing, his garden and his hobbies. He was an avid craftsman who carved and painted birds, built furniture, and even built a sailboat with his kids.
He and Irma retired to Florida in 1982, and spent their time playing golf and traveling. His favorite place was the family lake property in Connecticut, which he continued to visit every summer. They moved to the Plains at the Parrish Homestead in Oneonta in 2010.
He leaves his wife of 68 years; his daughter, Susan and her husband, Michael Otis of Cooperstown; and three grandchildren, Jessica, William and Benjamin.
He was predeceased by his son, William.
He will be remembered as the easy going, considerate family man that he was.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
