August Dickson Brackett
ONEONTA — August Dickson Brackett, 85, of Oneonta, was born in Louisville, Ky., on Dec. 29, 1927, to Elsie Mary Margaret Shields and Teddy August Brackett. He passed away on Sept. 11, 2013, at home.
Survivors include Norma, his wife of 56 years; sons, Paul (Holly) of Cary, N.C., Gary (Cathy) of Oneonta, Leslie of Stuart, Fla., and Daryl (Jennibeth) of Cary, N.C.; grandchildren, Christy, Jenny, Julie, Emily, Sarah, Mitchell and Adrienne; brother, Joseph (Maria) of California; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Anna Pfeiffer; a brother, Jules; a grandson, Travis; and a nephew, John Brackett.
Dickson received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Louisville, and his master’s degree from the University of Lexington, both in Kentucky.
He was drafted into the Army and served in Germany from 1952 to 1954.
He taught mathematics in Kentucky for 10 years before moving to Oneonta in 1967. He taught at the State University of New York at Oneonta until he retired in 1993.
Dickson had a lifelong love of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, where he spent many hours exploring. He enjoyed many happy hours hiking with family and friends in the Great Smoky Mountains, the Catskills, the Adirondacks, as well as in Quebec, Canada. The time he spent outdoors enabled him to gain a vast knowledge of wild plants and trees.
He was always eager to share his knowledge of nature with his family, friends and grandchildren on hikes, camping trips and afternoon walks through the neighborhood park near his home.
He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and was most recently attending Main Street Baptist Church.

A Celebration of Life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at the Main Street Baptist Church.
