ONEONTA — Carlton L. “Sonny” Carey Jr., 71, passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, surrounded by his family.

He was born Nov. 19, 1941, in Oneonta, the son of Carlton L. Carey Sr. and Bernice (Ross) Carey.

Sonny graduated Oneonta High School, Class of 1960. He was proud to be on the only undefeated OHS basketball team as the point guard. Following high school, Sonny built many Oneonta homes and was considered one of the finest local builders. He also worked as a mason-carpenter for SUNY Delhi and then for the New York State Department of Transportation on the bridge crew. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Tri-County Singles Club and loved to dance.

He is survived by his children, Regina and Kevin Mathewson of Bainbridge, Roger L. and Rhonda Carey of Oneonta, Ronald M. and Susan Carey of Oneonta, Stephanie Ray and her friend, Tim of Sherburne, Richard Carey of Edmeston and Kimberly and Walter Oliver of Morris; grandchildren, Kevin, Shelley and Matthew Mathewson, Brent Carey, Lisa Rifenburgh, Nichole, Kyle, and Jesse Ray, Tanner, Emily and Nathan Carey, Derrick Anderson, Rebekah and Johnathan Oliver; great-grandchildren, Danny and Owen Townsend, Lily and Ryan Milgo; best friend and companion, Shirley DeMott of Bainbridge; his brother, Gordon and Sharon Carey of Oneonta; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the funeral home with the Rev. Mel Farmer officiating.

Interment will follow in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
