UNADILLA — Martha Besemer Gill passed away peacefully at her home on Nov. 10, 2013, following a brief illness.

She was born on March 4, 1943, in Syracuse, to William and Rena (Doyle) Besemer. Martha and her family lived in New Woodstock for several years before moving to West Bainbridge, where she was primarily raised. Martha graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1961. She later graduated from Cortland State with a bachelor’s degree in education.

Martha was a substitute teacher in the Trumansburg and Bainbridge-Guilford school districts for many years. She taught English at the Unatego Central School from 1985 to 2003.

Martha enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking and spending time with her family and friends. One of her favorite places to spend time was Seneca Lake with family. Martha dedicated many hours to the Bainbridge Soup Kitchen. She cherished time spent with her wonderful friends in the “GJWTHF” club. Her faith was especially important to her.

Martha was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her son, Jace (Rebecca) Harvey of Sidney Center; daughter, Lori (Douglas) Smith of Gilbertsville; grandchildren, Heather (Andrew) Leigland of Great Falls, Mont.; Travis Harvey and fiancée, Stacie Clark of Sherburne; Danika, Brock and Cooper Harvey of Sidney Center; Paige Smith of Gilbertsville; and great-grandson, Devin Jace Leigland of Great Falls, Mont.

Martha is survived by her siblings, Margaret “Peg” Russell of Levant, Maine; Beverly (Rex) Thornton of Bainbridge; Raymond (Anneliese) Besemer of Endicott; Douglas (Joyce) Besemer of Coventryville; and twin sister, Thelma (David) Merritt of Jacksonville, Fla.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 11a.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, at the East Guilford Presbyterian Church, Route 8 and 35, East Guilford, with the Rev. Patty Wolfe officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, when the family will be present. Burial will be in the West Bainbridge Cemetery, West Bainbridge.

The family requests that donations be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta 13820 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 401 Hayes Ave, Endicott, NY 13760.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.
