Oneonta Tigers pitchers allowed 18 hits, their fielders committed three errors and their offensive mustered six hits.
It all added up to a 12-5 New York-Penn League loss to the Staten Island Yankees on Friday before an announced 727 fans at Damaschke Field.
It marked the fifth loss in seven games for the Tigers (27-20), who saw their lead in the Stedler Division shrink to a half-game over second-place Lowell (27-21), which defeated Batavia, 5-2, Friday.
The Tigers and Yankees continue their three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Damaschke Field.
Three Staten Island players finished with four hits _ leadoff man Francisco Santana (4-for-5), No. 2 hitter Zoilo Almonte (4-for-6) and No. 5 hitter Michael Lyon (4-for-6) _ and designated hitter Justin Milo drew five of the seven walks issued by Oneonta pitchers. Santana, Almonte and Lyon combined for eight RBIs and seven runs scored.
Tigers starter and losing pitcher Cory Hamilton (3-3) went four innings, allowing two runs _ one earned _ on five hits. He struck out one and walked three. Wade Kapteyn relieved and allowed five runs _ four earned _ on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings. Jose Ortega relieved Kapteyn and gave up five runs and three hits while walking two.
Oneonta scored twice off winning pitcher Sean Black (3-0) in the fifth to pull to 3-2.
Alexis Espinoza walked and went to second on a single to right by Wade Gaynor. Matthew Mansilla's sacrifice bunt moved both runners up and Espinoza scored on Jim Gulliver's sacrifice fly to center. Carmelo Jaime followed with an RBI single to left.
In the sixth inning, Staten Island plated two runs against Kapteyn. Santana and Almonte each singled with one out and moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Kyle Higashioka's followed with a two-run single to center to make it 5-2.
A throwing error by third baseman Gaynor helped Staten Island score in the seventh.
Carmen Angelini singled to left. Emerson Landoni then grounded to Gaynor, who threw wildly to second as both runners were safe.
Santana followed with a single to right that scored Angelini. On the play, Tigers right fielder Michael Rockett threw to cutoff man Rawley Bishop, who threw out Landoni at the plate to keep the score at 7-2.
Four walks by Michael Solbach helped the Tigers to a run in the seventh.
Mansilla led off with a walk. After Gulliver struck out, Jaime and Jamie Johnson walked to load the bases.
Michael Rockett followed with a popout to right before Bishop walked to force in Mansilla to make it 7-3.
Griffin Bailey relieved Solbach and struck out John Murrian to end the inning.
Staten Island tacked on another run in the eighth, when Neil Medchill singled to right with two outs, stole second and scored on Lyon's ground-rule double to right.
The Yankees scored five times in the ninth.
Almonte hit a two-run double, and Higashioka and Lyon each had RBI singles in an inning that also included three walks and a hit batsman.
Murrian's two-run double to left in the bottom of the ninth capped the scoring.
Gaynor and Jaime had two hits apiece for Oneonta.
