Cheers

... To the nearly $1 million flood-prevention project on Oneonta Creek that city officials recently indicated is proceeding nicely. The project's focus is taking out existing concrete and molding a new streambed where the creek flows under Center Street and the Mill Race along the edge of Neahwa Park.

We're impressed with this project's dual aims to protect residents and buildings from flooding while being environmentally conscious. The city is to be commended for its efforts to prevent damage such as that seen in the flood of 2006, and the financial backing at the state and federal levels made the project possible.

When small populations of trout were found in the creek, $180,000 was built into what was a $727,760 project to protect their habitat. Fish ladders will allow aquatic life to move up the creek, which will benefit the local ecosystem.

We hope that this level of forward movement and success continues.

o ... To Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown for its work with individuals with disabilities.

Bassett was recently presented with the 2009 New York State Employer Recognition Award. It was nominated by Arc Otsego and the state office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities for its commitment to recruiting individuals with disabilities for employment and other opportunities, according to an article in the Oct. 17 and 18 edition of The Daily Star.

We wish to join in applauding Bassett Healthcare for its commitment to providing opportunities for those with disabilities. We hope all businesses in our area will strive toward the goals for which Bassett has been honored.

o ... To the Jail Ministry of Otsego County, which recently marked its 50th year of service.

In 1959, the Cooperstown Council of Churches began ministering to inmates at the county jail. Today, lay volunteers and clergy from more than 12 churches provide Bible study, 12-step program leadership, individual counseling and other services to inmates and their families.

We are certain that countless people have benefited from this program over its 50 years of existence, and we hope its success continues.

o ... To the paving of the connecting road between the Southside Mall and Wal-Mart.

For a while, venturing between the two shopping destinations by car had been putting vehicle suspensions at risk, with more potholes than pavement. Many shoppers would get back onto state Route 23, making the traffic situation on that road worse.

We're glad to see the road smoothed, and look forward to a more-pleasant shopping experience.
